MISSION

REDUCE IMPACT OF PARENTAL INCARCERATION ON CHILDREN & FAMILY

Heart Of JOB Foundation initiatives aim to improve recently released prisoners’ outcomes, enhance family relationships, promote employment opportunities, and connect individuals and families affected by incarceration with needed supportive services with a larger goal of increasing the safety and economic well-being of reentering individuals, their families, and the communities to which they return.

Work together to enhance community safety Because reintegration to the community after incarceration intersects with issues of health, housing, education, employment, family, faith, and community well-being. Although incarceration is a barrier to parent-child contact and family reunification, it is not insurmountable.

Parents who were incarcerated may need to repair relationships with family members to address issues that preceded the imprisonment and to address the implications of reentry on family members. Children may experience stress, among other feelings, when a parent is released from jail or prison. The nature of a child’s relationship with the parent may have changed, or the child may have developed other strong bonds.

Children who have experienced the incarceration of a parent are at increased risk for physical health problems; developmental delays; learning difficulties; behavioral problems; delinquency; and mental health concerns. Parental incarceration is also associated with increased risk for educational concerns, such as truancy, suspension, and expulsion; grade retention; fewer years of school completion; and higher rates of dropping out.
